Your Guide to Navigating the Partner Visa Process
Welcome to the Mixed Neshamot blog! 💕 This is our very first post, and we’re thrilled to share insights, tips, and experiences to support women navigating life in Israel. Today, we’re diving into a key milestone many of us face: the Misrad Hapnim partner visa interview.
If you’ve just received your appointment, congratulations! This step is a big one, and it shows your dedication to building a new life with your Israeli partner. But let’s be real—it can feel a little intimidating. Don’t worry! We’re here to guide you through it and ensure you feel ready to take on this important day.

What Is Misrad Hapnim?
First things first: Misrad Hapnim (Ministry of Interior) is the governmental office responsible for reviewing and deciding your residency or citizenship status in Israel. Every year, we go back to MH to prove that our relationship is genuine and that we’re committed to creating a future together in Israel.
For simplicity, we’ll call it MH (because let’s face it, the spelling is tricky!).
The Interview Process
When you arrive at MH for your visa appointment, you’ll likely have to go through an interview to demonstrate that your relationship or marriage is authentic. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
The Interview: Part I
Your Israeli partner will be interviewed first—alone. This can last around 40 minutes, so bring a book, some snacks, or anything to pass the time.
They can request an interview in English, and sometimes clerks who speak Arabic, Russian, or Spanish are available. Hebrew is always an option, too, and it’s a great opportunity to show off your language skills!
The Interview: Part II
Once your partner finishes, it’s your turn. Your interview is typically shorter and focuses on matching your answers with theirs. Expect personal, direct questions. Stay calm and honest—it’s okay if you don’t know every detail.
Mixed Neshamot’s Top Tips for Your Interview
To make the experience smoother, we’ve gathered advice from women in our Mixed Neshamot community - you can also check a list of questions we have gathered from our experiences:
Prepare Together: Review potential questions with your partner beforehand. Sensitive topics like religion, children, and politics should have aligned, concise answers to avoid discrepancies.
Honesty Is Key: There’s no need to embellish or fabricate answers. If you don’t know something, it’s better to admit it than to guess. Clerks are experienced and can sense inconsistencies.
Stay Calm and Listen: If you’re unsure of a question, feel free to ask for clarification. Don’t stress about giving exact dates or details—approximations are okay.
Pay Attention to Hints: Clerks might give subtle hints to jog your memory. Stay observant and open to their cues.
After the Interview
Once both interviews are complete, the clerk will review your answers, print them, and ask you both to sign. If everything aligns, congratulations! You’ll either receive your first visa or renew your current one.
However, if something doesn’t quite add up, MH might schedule a follow-up appointment to finalize their decision.
At Mixed Neshamot, we’re here to connect, empower, and support women navigating the partner visa process and life in Israel. From tips like these to language learning and cultural discussions, we’ve got your back every step of the way.
